Snowy Day!! Finally!!

This winter has been pretty mild so far. The temperature was so warm this weekend that we were out playing at the park with no jackets at all. It seems like we have a few really cold days, then it warms up for a few. This morning it was colder out, upper 30's, and rain was forecasted for all day. Well, the weather man really got it wrong this time! It started snowing a little after noon and didn't stop until after 6. The flakes were big and fluffy. Jackson and I went out about 4 and didn't come back in until almost 6. We had a blast building a snowman and just exploring. Poor Joe got to experience lovely "Snowy DC" traffic and it took him almost 2 1/2 hours to get home. Unfortunately, it is supposed to be sunny and warmer tomorrow, so the snow will probably be gone in no time at all. Oh well, it was fun for a day!

On New Years Eve, the weather was beautiful! It was really warm (compared to earlier in the week!) so we wanted to get outside and take advantage of the nice weather while we had it. We decided to pack a lunch and head to Burke Lake Park. Jackson enjoyed playing on the playground equipment and climbing the rocks. Then we had our picnic and took off for a hike around the lake. It was such a nice day. We ended the afternoon playing some baseball in one of the fields. That is one thing that Jackson can never say no to doing!

Joe had a few days off last week and we wanted to do something fun. It was pretty cold and windy out on day, so we decided to head to the bowling alley! Jackson had never been bowling before, and has been begging me to go. We had a blast! Jen was the big winner, with a not so big score. But we all had fun anyway!

Christmas Day

Jackson actually "slept in" til 7:00 on Christmas Morning! We will take it! He got us both up and then we headed down to see if Santa had come. Jackson was very happy to see that Santa left him some Legos and a Playmobil Pirate Ship. We opened a few gifts and played alot. Joe fried a turkey for our Christmas Dinner. It was delicious! It was a really nice relaxing fun filled day.

Christmas Eve we had a nice dinner and headed to the Candlelight Service at Church. Jackson stayed with us and did great. It was so sweet to hear his little voice singing the carols and other songs. Of course he sang his little heart out for his favorite, Away in the Manger. After Church, we came home and put out cookies and apple pie for Santa, made sure the fireplace was open, and read The Night Before Christmas. Then it was off to bed for a little boy.

Days Before Christmas

I have taken so many pictures in the past two weeks it is insane! So here some a huge picture dump!

We had a wonderful Christmas break. Mere-Mere arrived the week before Christmas to spend two weeks with us. And Joe was also able to get some time off. The past few weeks were jam packed with baking, shopping, decorating, eating, playing, partying, present opening, more eating, bowling, sight seeing, movie watching, and lots more! Whew, I am exhausted just thinking about it. It was really nice to have Joe's mom with us for the holidays this year. Joe and I were actually able to sneak out for a couple of dates. And, of course, Jackson had a blast with Mere-Mere. His favorite thing they did was "movie night" complete with a "feast".

Today, Mere-Mere had to fly home and Joe headed back to work for real. It was just Jackson and I again. Tomorrow Jackson heads back to school. How did the past two weeks go by so quickly? Too much fun.....

A few weeks ago, Jackson's class had their first performance. They had been practicing their Christmas songs for the few weeks since prior. It was so sweet. They ended up singing about seven songs; Jingle Bells (complete with lots of jingling bells!!), Rudolph, Away in a Manger, At Christmastime, I've Been Waiting for Christmas, Here is a Gift, and We Wish You a Merry Christmas. They had cute little hand motions to most of the songs too. Jackson's favorites were Away in a Manger and We Wish You a Merry Christmas. There were lots of kids out sick that week of school, so some of his classmates were missing, but they still did a really great job! Looking forward to the Spring Concert too!!

Getting caught up!! Hooray! I just need to stay on top of things as they happen this month. Since it is jam packed with fun stuff.

I kicked off the month running in the Hot Chocolate 15K in DC. For such a big popular race (in other cities) it was an "epic failure" for the inaugural race in DC. It is too bad. Such a great idea and great time to race. Despite all the hurdles we had to conquer (waiting in horrible traffic-taking almost 2 hours to go 2 miles over the bridge), standing out in the sub-freezing temps for over an hour waiting for the late start of the race, running on the freeway in Maryland-next to 18 wheelers and cars, breathing the lovely exhaust for almost 6 miles, dangerous running terrain---I actually ran a really fast race. It was a PR for me, running a 8 min 14 sec mile. Oh and I even took a fall at Mile 8 and scuffed up my knees and hands pretty badly. Oh well. Every race is a learning experience! I am gearing up for my first Full Marathon in March. I am nervous just thinking about it!

Last weekend, our neighborhood had their annual Holiday Lighting Ceremony. They have carriage rides, S'mores, crafts for the kiddos, and Santa and Mrs. Clause. It was a very sunny, but very cold day. Jackson wanted nothing to do with Santa. He even said that he didn't want any presents this year!! Turns out he was sick that day with double ear infections and a fever. Hmm, wonder if he will change his mind now that he is feeling better. I don't know. He hasn't even wanted to see Santa at the mall. He told me, "Mom, you know that isn't the real Santa?" But he promised not to tell any of the little kids. so sweet. He did say that he would call Santa and tell him that he "could bring me some Legos. Any kind he wants". Funny boy!!

This week, Jackson has his school Christmas program. I can't wait to see all his little friends and hear them singing their songs. I better make sure the video camera is charged!!

November Catch Up

Once again, I have fallen far, far behind on the blog. It is so hard to sit down and write when I have a moment, because there are 5 million and 65 other things to be doing right now!!! Shopping for presents, wrapping presents, mailing presents, hiding presents...and don't get me started on baking!! I am really not complaining because I do all the stuff I do this time of year because I really love to do it! I enjoy making homemade gifts for my friends and neighbors. It is just the little things that make someone's day. I should just do special things for people throughout the year I guess, then it wouldn't be such a mad rush when December 1st hits!

So, let's see...what have we been up to. The usual holiday stuff that begins around Thanksgiving and doesn't stop until well in to January. Jackson had a really nice Thanksgiving Feast at school with the other 4 year old class. His class wore their pilgrim attire and the other class wore their Indian stuff. They were all so cute! That was one LONG table! They feasted on mini cornbread muffins and Friendship salad (that was made by each child contributing 1/4 cup of fruit). They all showed off their fabulous manners too.

Sadly, I have been very bad about taking pictures in November. But I promise you we have been on the go!! Joe and I even got to spend an adult afternoon/evening out with lots of good friends at a charity wine tasting event. It is an annual event put on by our realtor (and Coastie spouse) and her mom. They lost their sister/aunt to breast cancer a few years ago and they hold the event at La Grange Winery every year to raise money for breast cancer. It is such a fun time and we had a great time catching up with our friends and actually carrying on a conversation without kiddos!

We stayed home this year for Thanksgiving and had a "quiet" dinner with Joe's Dad. It was nice to not have to deal with the hassles of traveling, but we sure did miss all our family. Maybe next year!

We are all ready for Halloween and Trick or Treating tonight. Yesterday afternoon, we (i.e. Joe) carved our pumpkin. We had two nice sized pumpkins to carve, but one of them was not in such good shape. It had a few wormy friends living in it. So we didn't want to "disturb" them and just left it on the porch for now. Jackson did a great job scooping the "guts" out of the pumpkin. And he also drew the face that was eventually carved. And of course, he did some horsing around too....

This morning at school, Jackson's class had a Halloween Parade. They were all so adorable in their costumes. I love to watch him at school activities to see how he interacts with his teachers and other class mates. I am just amazed at how well he does and overjoyed with how much he loves it. Tonight we are going trick or treating in the neighborhood with a big group of people. Thank goodness Jackson is taking a little rest now so he will be chock full of energy tonight to last the whole night!! Happy Halloween!!

Cox Farms Fall Festival!

Another Fall Festival!! This time we went with Jackson's class from school. Cox farms is another HUGE farm full of activities. Some of the things they offer are 5 giant slides, hayrides, rope swings, live cow milking demonstrations, farm animals and babies (pigs, goats, sheep, llamas, etc.) live entertainment, a cornfield adventure, straw tunnels, and lots and lots of pumpkins!! Oh and awesome kettle corn and roasted cinnamon almonds that you can smell from miles away! My mouth is watering now just thinking about those! Unfortunately, every other preschool/public school in Northern Virginia/DC decided to visit Cox Farms the same day we did. So it was a weeee bit crowded. And very.muddy. But we still had a great time. Jackson's favorite thing was the "bumpity bumpity slide". Which we had to ride three times in a row. It was pretty fun! I think that is the last of our fall festival visits until next year. But who knows...we still have one week left to find some more to visit!!

Since Joe and Jackson were both "off" on Columbus Day, we decided to do something fun and different together. We took Jackson to play Putt-Putt Golf. It was his first time and I think he is hooked! He asked every day last week if we could go play. Unfortunately, it isn't cheap to play. Too bad they don't have a "frequent putter's" card or something like that. It is a great activity to do in the afternoons to kill some time. Jackson did finally talk us in to going again yesterday. He is getting pretty good. Maybe we have a future Tiger Woods on our hands...

Butler's Orchard Fall Festival!

A few weekends ago, we went to a fabulous Fall Festival at Butler's Orchard in Maryland. We met Janice, Anna, and the Powers Family there for the Fall Fun!! It was a huge festival with plenty to do. We ended up being there about 5 hours and still didn't get to do everything. Some of the highlights were the HUGE burlap sack slide, the corn and hay mazes, the "hayfight" in the barn (basically a barn full of hay in which the kids went wild throwing it everywhere and jumping in it!), the hayride to the pumpkin patch, and the many play structures. There was even a combine that the kids could climb in and slide out the back. A dream come true for my little boy!! It was a beautiful day to spend outside doing all the fun activities. We picked out a few good pumpkins and had some tasty food. Can't wait to go again next year!

CG Eagle

A few weeks ago, the CG Eagle was at Baltimore's Inner Harbor for the weekend. We couldn't pass up an opportunity to take a tour of the ship on which Joe spent many a day "swabbing the deck and polishing the brass". We had a nice time exploring the ship and walking around the harbor docks. Who knows, maybe someday Jackson will be cruising on the CG Eagle just like his Daddy did!!

On October 4th, Jackson's actual birthday, we let him choose where he wanted to eat dinner. He chose Uncle Julio's Mexican Restaurant. The one and only reason Jackson loves Uncle Julio's is the fact that they give out balls of tortilla dough to the kids. Jackson will play with that dough ball until it is all dried up! We had a nice dinner and then headed over to Ben and Jerry's for a birthday ice cream dessert.

When we got home, there was a special package waiting on the front porch. It was a present from Mere-Mere. She sent Jackson some awesome cowboy boots. He LOVED them and put them on right away. The best part is (according to Jackson) that they light up!! He pranced around the house for the rest of the night. He ran to get his Woody cowboy hat and said that all he needed was a cowboy shirt and two holster belt. Hear that Mere-Mere!!

Too Much Has Happened!

My poor little neglected blog. I remember the days when I would update you daily. Oh how you suffer now. It has been way too long since I last posted. And it is almost too overwhelming to start to catch up now. The hundreds of pictures that have been snapped, the many fun trips that have been taken. I wish there was an App for automatic blog updates. Or one where I could just talk and it would just appear on the blog. Well, I don't think it exists, so I will slowly but surely update on my own.

In the beginning of October, we had a big celebration for a certain little boy turning 4! I can't believe it. Jackson wanted to have his party at the fire station. Perfect! Easy enough! We started the party at the Clifton Fire Station. All of the kids were very attentive as the Fire fighters gave us a great tour of the engines and all the other equipment. There is just something about Fire stations that gets every little guy and girl so excited! After our behind the scenes tour and playing, we headed a few blocks away to Clifton Park where the kiddos played and we had cake. Thankfully the rainy cold weather cleared out for the hour we were outside, and the sun even started to shine. It was the perfect way to celebrate Jackson's 4th birthday!!

First Day of School!

Today was the first official day of preschool for Jackson. He was more than ready to be there! I was so proud of him marching right in to his class and hanging his backpack up in his cubbie. After taking care of his backpack, he picked out his name tag. Thankfully he was on a green apple since green is his favorite color these days. I hung around for a few more minutes and then decided to that he was going to be totally fine there without me. I was so happy, but sad at the same time. I bent down to tell him goodbye and he gave me the best hug and a kiss. I admit, I did start to cry. He is just growing up way too fast!! I am so proud of him. On the way home he was telling me about his day. I asked him what his favorite part of school was and he quickly answered, "Recess!!". And his second favorite part is snack time. Hope this isn't a sign of things to come... Oh, and he told Joe the exact same things when he got home from work. Silly Boy!!

San Diego-Part 2!

After a fun filled weekend in LA, we made our way back to San Diego for a few more days. Joe had conferences during the day, so Jackson and I got to explore on our own and enjoy the fabulous hotel and pool area. Between the exercise room, Concierge lounge, many elevators and escalators, shops, Starbucks, and pool and splash pad, we could have spent hours exploring the hotel. The trolley and train went right by in front of our hotel, so that was a big hit too. One morning, Jackson and I walked a few blocks to the New Children's museum. There were a few fun play areas out front and lots to do in the museum itself. While waiting in line, we discovered that the little boy behind us was also named Jackson. Well, the two Jackson's hit it off and were inseparable while we were there. It was great for me, because Jackson had another friend his age and his grandmother was full of information about the San Diego area. The next morning we walked down the boardwalk to the Midway Museum and spent the morning exploring the aircraft carrier. We had a wonderful pedicab ride back to the hotel after we walked all over the huge boat! Both afternoons were spent playing in the pool and enjoying the wonderful San Diego sun.

We had a great vacation and can't wait for an opportunity to go back again. Maybe next time we move San Diego will be first on our Dream Sheet...fingers crossed!

After a day spent with Shamu and his pals, we packed up and headed to LA to visit Michael and Paige. The weekend was filled with great food, lots of exercising (Jackson in Paige's Pilates studio), planting seeds in the garden, playing at the park, hitting a local Farmer's Market, playing Wii bowling (Jackson's new favorite), and just hanging out and enjoying time with Michael and Paige. It was a busy but relaxing weekend. We were sad to say goodbye to Grammy and Grampy at the end of the weekend. Monday morning Joe, Jackson, and I said our goodbyes to Michael and Paige and continued on to the second part of our San Diego trip.

Day 3- Sea World!

Time to see Shamu!! Jackson kept talking about wanting to see Shamu in San Diego, but when the time came he got very nervous about getting splashed. It took lots of convincing, but we finally managed to talk him into the Shamu show and the dolphin show. It was another beautiful San Diego Day. After spending the day at Sea World, we headed out to LA for a long weekend with Michael and Paige.

Day 2-San Diego Zoo!

One of us (Bet you can guess who!) was up bright eyed and busy tailed at 3am on our second day!! WAY too early to be up, but it was 6am by his body clock. He must not have gotten the memo that there was a 3 hour time difference. Oh well... Today we headed to the world famous San Diego Zoo! It was awesome! There were so many animals. The weather was a little overcast and cooler in the morning, so we were able to see alot of animals that are normally sleeping (from the heat) wide awake and playing. My Mom, Dad, and I got to feed the giraffes. That was the highlight of my day. Jackson chose to go to the reptile house with Joe instead. It was so fun to get slimed by their really long tongues. After exploring the zoo and riding the train at Balboa Park, we headed back to the hotel for an afternoon swim. Can't keep that boy out of the water now!

California Dreamin'-Day 1

A few weeks ago, we took a family vacation/work trip to California! Joe had a conference in San Diego, so Jackson and I decided to take the opportunity and tag along with him. My parents were also able to join us for a week. We met in San Diego and spent a few days there doing lots of fun things. Then we headed up to LA for a long weekend to visit my brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Paige. Grammy and Grampy headed home from LA and Joe, Jackson, and I went back to San Diego for Joe's conference. We stayed at an awesome hotel downtown on the water. Jackson and I had fun exploring during the day and enjoying the pool in the lovely San Diego weather. We took a TON of pictures....shocker! So I think I will break the trip up into a few posts. This past week has been pretty exciting too. We experienced our first VA earthquake, and many strong aftershocks, and are feeling the effects of Hurricane Irene right now as I type. Nothing too bad so far... Hope you all are safe and dry too!

We arrived in CA at 10:30 in the morning, so we had almost all day to start the fun! It took quite awhile to get our rental car, so we ended up getting some lunch, resting a bit in the hotel room, and then heading to Old Town to walk around and get some dinner. It was a long day...so we tried to get to bed early! Ha!!

Swimming like a Fish!

Jackson has become quite the little swimmer in the past five weeks. At the beginning of the summer, he hated to even get a tiny bit of water on his face. If he got splashed or got water in his eyes it was all over. Many tears were shed over that alone! I kept telling him, you are in the pool, you are going to get splashed. We started him in swimming lessons in hopes that he would just get over his fear/hatred of "water in the face". The first few lessons were rough. To say our little guy is strong willed is an understatement. But Coach Beth was awesome!! Many call her the Swim Whisperer and know we know why! In just 4 short 20 minute swim lessons, she had Jackson swimming like a fish! He LOVES it. Today was his last lesson and he made it a good one again. He had a blast and even jumped off her diving board. We are so appreciative of Coach Beth and her patience. I can't believe what a different "swimmer" kid Jackson is now!!

New Playground!

We are very blessed to live in a neighborhood packed with amenities for the kids. There are 3 pools to chose from and multiple Tot Lots (or playgrounds as I call them!) From our house, we can walk to about 3 different playgrounds, the elementary school, and the pool in less than 5 minutes. It is a perfect location. I guess there was a major "Tot Lot Inspection" during the winter and, according to the HOA, many of the lots didn't pass inspection. Not sure what that meant since kids were playing on the equipment all the time. But anyway, the lots that didn't pass inspection were totally torn out. Including the benches, picnic tables, and wood around them. Total overhaul!!

Well, the timing on the "Tot Lot Redo" wasn't great at all. In fact, it was awful! Just as Spring arrived and the weather turned beautiful, the playground closest to our house was gutted. Each week we anxiously awaited the arrival of the new equipment. Word got around that the new equipment was on back order and there was no estimate of when it would arrive. Great timing Little Rocky Run HOA!!!

About two weeks ago, we noticed some activity at our favorite playing spot. The calf dozer was out leveling the ground and making things new and pretty! Every day we checked on the status of the playground. And day after day the fancy orange construction fence was still there. But finally, after many long months of wishing and wanting, the new and improved Tot Lot was opened today. Truthfully, it has been so hot and humid here lately, the playground is the last place I wanted to go. But after dinner tonight we took a walk to check out the new digs. It did not disappoint. It was still about 90-something degrees, and the sun was beating down on us, but we did it!! I see many long hours spent there in our future!!

House Cleaner!

Jackson has taken quite an interest lately in helping me clean. Anytime I get out any sort of cleaning tool/supplies, (which tends to be often....) he is right there beside me wanting to help or do it himself. Love that!! He has even been known to tell family and friends and guests, to "Please take your shoes off. Mommy just scrubbed the floors!" That boy!! Is 4 years old too young to start the hard core cleaning chores? One can wish!!!!

A few weekends ago, we finally decided on a color for our master bedroom. We figured 4th of July weekend was a great time to get started!! Our room has VERY high ceilings and a high ledge area also. So we knew it wouldn't be a quick and easy paint job. We finally finished...two weeks later. It looks great and we love the blue we picked. Our little painter was a great big helper also. They are never to young to learn!

I think we have pretty much finished all the painting jobs we had planned for the house when we moved in a year ago. Now we can enjoy it all. Hmm, what is next on the list... anyone an expert at trimming really tall trees?

Still Here...

Yes, we are still here. It is so pathetic that I haven't posted anything since the middle of May?!! What have we been doing? The lazy days of summer have taken over. Jackson and I do pretty much the same thing everyday. Get up, head to the gym. Then run a few errands, which usually includes a grocery store every day. I HAVE to get better at planning my meals and avoid the grocery store money trap. After lunch, we head to the pool. It has been such a lifesaver this summer. It is already so hot and humid here that I can't imagine spending the days any other way-well at least being outside any other way. The gnats and heat are just too much. We have been so spoiled by having the pool a short walk away. I am already dreading it closing on Labor Day. But until then...we will swim, swim, swim!!

We had a wonderful 4th of July weekend. Joe and I kicked off the holiday weekend by going to see Wicked at the Kennedy Center. It was a fabulous show with beautiful costumes and scenery and wonderful acting and singing. It was a VERY late night for us. There was a Washington Nationals home game that night that was over about the same time Wicked was. So the metro was packed! Joe and I barely made it on to the train and we were smashed up against the doors praying they didn't accidentally open.

On Sunday we had a cookout at our house with the Powers and Frankfords, good friends from Kodiak. The Frankfords just moved to the DC area and we are so excited to get to hang out with them again. There were 5 kiddos 6 and under. It was so fun to see them all playing with each other. And it was so nice to chat and catch up with my girls!

We are all really tired today from a long week and already long weekend. We decided to take it easy today and just hang out here for the night. We know that Jackson will not make it to 9:30 to see the fireworks. Maybe next year....

Story Time with Jackson

When Grammy and Grampy were here, Grampy started a "tradition" one afternoon. It was naptime (a.k.a. resting time) for Jackson and Grampy decided to tell him the story of Jonah and the Whale. Jackson loved the story and begged Grampy to tell him the same story at naptime and bedtime from then on! Jackson memorized the story and has been telling it every since then. He even told it to the Honda Courtesy Driver "Mike" on our way back to the dealership the other day. Such a sweet boy with a love of Bible stories already.

Sunday was another beautiful day so we decided that it was a great day for a bike ride. Jackson has pretty much outgrown his tricycle and has been ready for a "real bike" for a little bit now. So Joe got his new bike, The Painkiller, all fixed up for him with some fancy new training wheels! Not sure who came up with the idea to name a little boys bike, The Painkiller....but oh well. He was very excited. I think his favorite part was braking. He especially loved skidding through the leaves on the driveway. Looks like we are going to have many more bike riding days ahead. Let's hope I can keep up with him!!

Grammy and Grampy Come to Town!

We had a wonderful visit with Grammy and Grampy. The weather was beautiful all week so we spent lots of time playing outside and enjoying some other fun attractions in the area. We started the week visiting Frying Pan Park to see all the new Spring Babies. There were lots of little piglets, goats, lambs, chicks, and some calves. It was fun to see how many there were!

Our next big outing was to Union Station. Jackson has really become interested in trains lately. He notices train tracks everywhere we go. So we thought that a metro ride to Union Station to see the trains would be great. After a slow start and a looonngg wait for the metro to leave the station, we finally made it to Union Station. There was a really nice lady working there that was really taken by Jackson. She gave him all kinds of free stuff, including a Curious George book, a coloring book, and a conductors hat! Jackson had a great time on the metro and looking at all the "fast" trains. Thank goodness our ride home went much smoother and quicker!

We celebrated a few big days when Grammy and Grampy were here too. The day after Mother's Day was my Mom's birthday. Jackson was a bit disappointed that Grammy didn't want "chocolate cake with chocolate icing", but he was okay when he got to help blow out the candles.

After many fun filled days we were sad to have to say goodbye to Grammy and Grampy. But we know it won't be long until we see them again!! Thanks for a great visit.

We were invited to the Powers' house for an Easter Brunch and Egg Hunt on Saturday Morning. It was a nice little reunion of some of our good Kodiak family friends. We got to catch up with the Naffs, Turners, and Mullens that morning. It had been way too long since we had gotten together. The kids had a blast and the weather turned out perfect for an outside egg hunt. Kimberly was a fabulous hostess (as usual!) and we had a great time eating, dyeing eggs, eating some more, and hunting eggs. Let's get together again soon!!

What We've Been Up To!

I am going to try to get all caught up on posting pictures from the past few weeks. I have taken a ton of pictures though...so this may take a few posts. Last week, we had some special visitors. Uncle Danny, Aunt Ali, and Tanner came to see us! Jackson was so excited when they pulled into the driveway. He couldn't get to the door fast enough. It was so cute to see them hug each other and be so happy to see one another. We spent the week doing lots of sightseeing, hitting many of the DC hotspots, and, of course, playing lots inside and outside. The weather was perfect for their visit. The first day we headed into the city to see some monuments and go to the Museum of Natural History. Little did we realize that all of the East Coast was on spring break that week, and I think all of them were in DC. So the traffic was a little crazier and everything was VERY busy. The boys had a good time checking out the dinosaurs and other animals at the museum. The next day we headed to the Air and Space Museum that is out by Dulles Airport. The kids loved being in the control tower and watching the planes land. And of course, seeing the space shuttle. Jackson was naming all the rockets he saw too. Tiny bit obsessed still with all things space. On Wednesday, we knew the weather was going to get bad that afternoon, so we decided to go to the zoo for the morning. I guess everyone else in the city had the same idea. The parking lot was full by 10:30. But we still got in and saw some animals. And the weather man was wrong again. It never rained. Oh well...
We really enjoyed the visit and can't wait to see everyone again.

We have been very busy the past few weeks and I have lots to blog about. But for now, we wanted to wish everyone a Happy Easter. What a wonderful day. Jesus died for our sins and is ALIVE! We started the morning at Church at the early service (which seems to be our norm these days. Life with an early bird!) It is a beautiful Spring day here and we plan to get out and enjoy the day after a little someone is finished "resting"... Have a happy day!

Take Me Out to the Ballgame!

Last Sunday, Jackson, Joe, and I spent a fun afternoon at the ballpark seeing the Potomac Nationals take on the Lynchburg Hillcats! We scored a great deal on tickets through Groupon. $6 for a ticket and hot dog! The Potomac Nationals are the minor league affiliate of the Washington Nationals. It was a perfect "first real ballgame" experience for Jackson. We have heard from many of our friends that going to a Washington Nationals game is way too expensive and too much "hype" for little kids. The minor league version was just right. Especially for a game that can be so sloooowwwww like baseball. We watched a few innings then took a walk around the stadium. There was a kids area set up with 4 bounce houses, and of course, Jackson wanted to check that out. So he bounced a bit then we found some good seats higher up behind home plate. We made it past the seventh inning stretch before we decided to head home. It was a really fun, relaxing afternoon and we are looking forward to more games. If you ask Jackson about the game he will tell you all about the two guys who broke their bats! Funny what leaves a lasting impression in their minds!

Today we finally had a beautiful day that was nice and HOT and begging for us to play outside. We headed to the elementary school fields for some baseball with Jake and Skyler, then some fun on the school playground. Jackson was starting to fade and wanted to go home. I think he was a little warm, because once we got home he wanted to do some "yardwork". He dug in the dirt for about 45 minutes and was so proud to find an earthworm friend. After he finished his yardwork, we did some jumping on the trampoline until Daddy got home. Then it was off to the back deck for some sandbox fun. I am exhausted from all that. Oh and we also met a friend and her 3 kiddos for lunch at Chick-fil-a after a morning at the gym. If he isn't asleep before his head hits the pillow tonight I don't know what else will do it!

Almost a Month?

I can't believe it has been almost a month since I have posted anything. Where has the time gone? And what have we been doing? Well, I guess alot of nothing since I haven't taken many pictures or been moved to blog. So in an effort to keep the few readers we have updated, I will find something to say.

Two weeks ago Joe, Jackson, and I went back to E-City to visit for a few days. Joe had some meetings and Jackson and I decided to tag along and see all our friends. It was a very nice few days and made us miss being there so much. We stayed with the MacMillans, and the three little monkeys (Ali, Alec, and Jackson) had a blast! They were all so sad when we had to go. Jackson keeps asking if we are going back to stay at Ali and Alec's house. Jackson and I were able to go to the YMCA both days. It felt like we had never left. Jackson was very excited to see Anne Marie and play in the kids area. We were able to do a girl's (and Jackson) lunch one day and had playgroup one afternoon, all just like the good ol' days!

After spending a few days in NC, we headed further south to Manning, SC to see Joe's dad. We ended up packing up most of his stuff and brought him back to VA to stay with us for a bit. It was a long trip, but very fun. I think Jackson's favorite part were the hotel gyms at both places we stayed. He would have run on the treadmill for days! Just like Mommy! Love that boy!!

Last weekend was a busy one. Friday (March 25th) was my Dad's birthday. Unfortunately we weren't able to spend the day with Grampy this year, but we will be celebrating when he and Grammy come to visit later this month. On Saturday I ran in the National Half Marathon. It was my second half and I managed to finish in under 2 hours. Despite only having 5 weeks to train. I wish I had done a few more outside hill runs, since there were plenty of hills on the course. It was so nice to have my good friend Amy running with me, she is the only way I made it past those hills!! Joe and Jackson met me at the finish line. It was so sweet to see their smiling faces. Jackson was so young the last time I ran that he didn't remember it. He has confiscated my medal and keeps it in his room now. My future running partner!!

We celebrated my birthday on Sunday with a nice Mexican dinner out with my boys (and Grandpa Joe) and then comae home to enjoy some fabulous desserts from Wegmans!! Chocolate Creme Pie and Fruit Tart! Delicious!!

Not much else has been happening this week. The weather is certainly NOT spring like yet, so we haven't been out much. But the trees and flowers are starting to bud and bloom, so we know Spring is just around the corner. Jackson is itching to get out to the playgrounds and trampoline!

April and May will be a busy months with lots of visitors. First Uncle Danny, Aunt Ali, and Tanner, then my parents, and hopefully Auntie Kat and Uncle Chris. I will be better about pictures and posts....

I just realized that I never posted any pictures from Joe's birthday. We had a small family celebration for him on his birthday. Jackson helped me decorate the house and make a cake. It was so fun to listen to him "ask" Dadddy what kind of cake and icing he wanted. I say "ask" because Jackson basically told Joe what kind of cake he wanted. SO it really turned out to be Joe's birthday with Jackson's cake! It was so funny. The Saturday before Joe's big birthday, we had a surprise dinner for him. He had no idea! I am so shocked that I pulled it off, especially with Jackson talking about a certain birthday hat all week! I could never be a party planner. Thanks to Kimberly for helping me pull off the surprise and for taking pictures ( and taking charge...). Happy Birthday Joe!

Grammy, Grampy, and Slime!!

Last week, Grammy and Grampy came to visit!! Grammy was actually here for a week, then Grampy joined her. Jackson has been in Grand-parent Heaven the past 3 weeks. The next few days should be interesting, since Grammy and Grampy left Saturday and Joe heads to Florida tomorrow morning. We had a great time with all our visitors. It has been really cold, but we haven't gotten any more snow. Since it has been so frigid and very "winter like", we have found many fun things to do inside. One day the UPS man brought a fun package to Jackson (from Grammy and Grampy)...a drum set!! Not sure if you guys know about Jackson's love of drums and guitars. He must have played those drums for an hour straight. And he only stopped then because we made him take a break. Maybe he will be a famous musician one day...

One afternoon, we decided it was time to make some slime!! Jackson had a blast playing in it and made quite a mess. But the beauty of the slime is that it is a breeze to clean up! It is one weird substance. It looks wet and liquidy, but when you first touch it feels hard. You dig down and pick some up in your fingers and it just falls right off like slime! So cool! Jackson's fingernails were stained blue for a day from it, but other than that it was another fun way to spend some time.

In other news, Jackson is going to have another little cousin. My brother and his wife are having a baby!! They just found out a few days ago that they are having a girl. Can't wait to spoil her with lots of girly stuff!! Congrats Michael and Paige. We can't wait to meet her!!

Better go find some exciting things for us to do the next few days. Or else....

Museum of Natural History

Joe's Mom, Mere-Mere, was here visiting us for a couple of weeks. We decided to take a trip into the "big City" and see the Museum of Natural History. It was a VERY cold morning, right after the big snow, so it was pretty quiet in DC. We found a parking spot right in front, and headed into the Dinosaur Museum to check it out. Wow, that is a BIG museum! I think we will have to go back a few more times to see everything. Jackson's favorite part was the Butterfly Garden. The dinosaurs came in a close second. Now on to the other famous DC sites!

A few weeks ago, Joe and Jackson built a Heli Cat Rocket. Jackson has been a wee bit obsessed with rockets for over a year now. He watches rocket videos on you tube all the time. Some of his favorites show how to build small model rockets. So he has been begging to get one and build it for a few weeks now. After the rocket was complete, it was time to test it out. We headed to a local park with lots of "open space". It was a very cold day, but not windy, key in "blasting off" a rocket. The mission was a success! It was a fun afternoon!

A REAL Snowstorm....Finally!!

Around 3:30 Tuesday afternoon, the heavy wet snow started falling, hard and fast! It didn't stop until about 9:30 that night. Needless to say, the now hit at the worst possible time for the commuters of the DC area. Thankfully, Joe got to leave at 2 and they made it home just as the sleet starting changing to heavy snow. It was a weird day, first a heavy rain, then a heavy sleet, then heavy snow. The roads were a mess. There were people stranded every where. Some people were stranded on the G-W Parkway for 13 hours!! Most people were reporting a 4 hour commute time home. Not fun! The snow was so heavy that it coated the tree limbs and power lines, bringing many of each down. We had a big tree fall across our driveway. Many people were without power, and some still are. BUT....it was a great snow to play in! Yesterday afternoon, while Jackson rested, Joe chopped down the tree, Mere-Mere (who is visiting us now!) made a snowman, and I shoveled. When Jackson woke up, we all went out to play. First we dressed the snowman, then played on the deck some. Jackson was having a blast just walking in the deep snow, making snowballs, and knocking the snow off the deck railing. Then we headed to the side of our house to our sledding hill. It was awesome! I think the best part is going through the trees at the end of the "run"! We are about to head out again to do some more sledding. And more snow is on the way too. I guess winter is here for awhile after all!

Ski Weekend!

Last weekend we met the MacMillan's and Ramsamooj's in at Wintergreen Resort in Virginia for a weekend of skiing! We rented a really nice (and BIG!) house on the mountain. Unfortunately there wasn't much snow around the house, but there was plenty to play with in on the ski mountain. The kids had a great time playing together just like the "old days" in Elizabeth City. The adults had a great time catching up, enjoying good food, and playing games. The girls kicked some booty in Trivial Pursuit, the 90's edition. Wintergreen has an area called Ridgley's Fun Park, designed specifically for younger kids. It had a mini-tubing carousel, bear paw snow shoes, tunnels, plus a hill for tubing. There was also a huge tee-pee that was a great place to warm up and make s'mores. We ended up going there two mornings. The third day all the kids went to the Snow Play program while some of us skied and others hit the spa. It was a fun weekend. Just the right amount of time away!

More Snow!

We ended up getting a little snow yesterday afternoon and last night. Not really enough to cause any problems, and definitely not enough to make a snowman! But that is okay since Joe has to head out of town today. Although if we had gotten a ton of snow he wouldn't have gone...oh well! Next time...one of these days we REALLY are going to get that major snow storm that the weather guys forecast. Looks like we dodged another one this time! After we hit the gym this morning, Jackson and I went out for a bit to play. But it is REALLY windy today and the snow kept blowing off the houses and trees and pelting Jackson in the face. He wasn't too fond of that. Hmmm...that ski trip we are going on next weekend should be interesting...let's hope it isn't windy!

January and February are going to be pretty busy for us. Next weekend we are going on a fun ski trip with some good friends of ours. Then the onslaught of family begins! We have visits from Mere-Mere and Grammy and Grampy coming up. We are very excited. And, hopefully one of these days, we will really get a big snow storm. So far we have dodged the last two "blizzard" predictions. But as I sit here now typing, the snow is beginning to fall...we will see what the ground looks like tomorrow!! Can't wait!!

Christmas 2010

We hope you all had a wonderful Christmas. We had a busy, fun-filled week. Tuesday night we had our Life Group Christmas Party/White Elephant Gift Exchange. Always a fun time doing that! Thursday night was a no kids night as we met some of our great friends (the Powers and Frankfords) out for a lovely dinner. It was so good to see Mark and Janice again (they are visiting from Ketchikan) and we hope they will get orders to be stationed in the DC area this summer. Friday night we had some friends over for Christmas Eve Dinner and then went to Church for the Christmas Eve Service. It was a really nice service. After that, we rushed home to get ready for Santa's visit that night!

Christmas morning was spent at home with Joe, Jackson, and I enjoying a lazy morning of opening gifts and playing with new toys! Jackson gave us a Christmas surprise and slept until almost 7 that morning. Then he climbed into bed with us to "snuggle". Finally, about 15 minutes later, he said, "Let's go see what Santa brought us!" I know it will never happen that way again, so we enjoyed every minute of it. Jackson must have been a good little boy this year because the tree was filled with fun things for him. And a few fun things for Joe and I! It took Jackson all day to open his presents because he wanted to play after opening each one. It was so fun to see him enjoy the whole Christmas experience this year. After a short "nap" , (side note: Jackson's consistent napping days are OVER! Sad day....Now I am lucky if he naps two or three times a week) we headed over to the Beavis' house for a wonderful Christmas dinner. Jackson had a blast playing with Josh, Katie, and Luke. Katie got a Karaoke machine from Santa and Luke got a nice guitar, so I am sure you can imagine what Jackson did all night... He and Katie were singing duets of "Yea! Uh-Uh! Baby! Alright!" all night long...And Josh, who got a little video recorder for Christmas, was recording it all. They were hilarious!

Now we are just trying to relax and catch our breath before the new year begins. Thankfully, yesterday was a very low key, indoor kind of day. After heading to Church, we stopped at the grocery store for a few necessities and headed home to hunker down for the "blizzard" that was forecasted. The weather guys were WAY wrong on that one for our area, we only got a dusting. I friends in E-City got hit the hardest! Too bad we aren't there to play with them. Maybe next snowstorm, that will be us...

Every year the Gaylord Hotel at National Harbor puts on an amazing Christmas experience. Thursday morning we headed down to take it all in! This year they had ICE-Featuring How the Grinch Stole Christmas. We didn't think that Jackson would want to hang out in the 9 degree temps looking at the 2 million pounds of ice...so we enjoyed all the other activities the hotel had to offer. From the train under the HUGE glass Christmas tree, to the dancing fountain, to the multiple rides to the 19th floor in the glass elevator...we had a great time. Maybe next year we will tackle the crazy ICE experience!

First REAL Snow!

It started snowing this morning about 9 and kept going all day until about 5. Luckily it wasn't a really heavy snow, but it was steady. It is pretty light and fluffy, which makes for easier shoveling, but not good for making snowballs or snowmen. Maybe a good thing...I hope this snow isn't any indication of a snowy winter to come. I don't know if I can handle another record snowfall season like the DC area had last winter. It is beautiful to see coming down and on the ground though!

Gingerbread House!

This year I decided that Jackson was probably old enough to decorate a gingerbread house, and at least be a little interested in doing it. So last night after dinner we got down to business!! Thanks to my friend Amy, I used her little trick of gluing the house together and not just using the icing. We tried using the icing first, but it wasn't holding at all! May have been operator error....I can't really say....but anyway, we finally got the house to stand. Meanwhile, Jackson was "sampling" the icing and candy with no end in sight. I am surprised he didn't have a stomach ache all night long. He was a bit wound up when it came time to go to bed. Oh well, it was a special occasion. Jackson had a blast putting the gumdrops and jelly beans on the house. Joe and I had a pretty good time too. I don't thin it will be winning any awards, but we love the finished product and had a fun time!

Last Friday the snow flurries were flying all morning and afternoon. Nothing really stuck though. BUT this morning we woke up to a some snow on the ground!! It was a bit of a surprise since the forecast wasn't calling for snow last night...I have a feeling this is only the beginning of a snowy winter...Today it is really cold and WINDY!! Chills you to the bone!

Christmas Lights!

Saturday we decided that we would start a new holiday tradition and checkout some of the amazing decorated houses around here. After dinner and a bath, we loaded a pajama wearing little guy into the car and we were off! There are tons of people who go all out! Many of them have the lights timed to music that you listen to on the radio. Some were a bit "too loud" for our taste, but most were really nice. The last one we saw was amazing! The "show" took place in the back yard. The front was decorated also-with lights and awesome icicles that looked almost real! There were tons of really tall trees in the back that were covered in lights. I wouldn't want to be the person in charge of making sure all those strands were working! It was a gorgeous sight to see. Maybe next year I can convince Joe to decorate like that at our house! Ha!

It was really hard to get good pictures....so you have to use your imagination too!

Nativity Scene

Jackson and I purchased a Little People Nativity Scene today at Target. He loves it and has had a great time playing with Baby Jesus and all the others. Today at lunch he was making the animals "gather around and see Baby Jesus!" He was cracking me up. The things that come out of his mouth sometimes are just amazing. I can't wait to hear what other things happen in Bethlehem...

It's Beginning to Look alot Like Christmas!!

On Friday night, our neighborhood had it's annual Holiday Lighting Ceremony. Mr. and Mrs. Claus arrived just in time to flip the switch and turn on the lights. It was a really cold night, but we enjoyed roasting marshmallows, some hot chocolate, and a fun carriage ride. I love that our neighborhood does so many things around all the holidays. And most are catered to the kiddos. Luckily we didn't have to wait in line too long for our turn to take a ride. It would have gotten pretty cold.

The next morning, Santa and Mrs. Claus came back to the neighborhood to have cookies and visit with all the kids. Jackson wanted no part in sitting on Santa's lap. Or even talking or looking at him for that matter. He did finally get close enough to Mrs. Claus to tell her that he wanted a hammer for Christmas. There may or may not have been a green icing cookie bribe involved....I really can't say...But nonetheless...we got the picture! There were crafts for the kids to do and lots and lots of cookies eat and hot chocolate to drink. Another fun time in Little Rocky Run!!

Catchin' Up!

Whew! What a busy few weeks it has been. It seems like once the week of Thanksgiving rolls around we are going non stop until after the New Year. This year has been no exception! Sunday before Thanksgiving, we headed up to Massachusetts to be with Joe's family for the week. The drive up was great. Not much traffic at all. Coming home....not the same story at all! I guess it is true that the Sunday after Thanksgiving IS the busiest travel day of the year. Oh well. We had a great time and it was totally worth it all.

We spent the first few days at Mere-Mere's house on the Cape. We visited with Nana and Buba, who just recently moved to the Cape also. It was nice to be able to see them every day, along with the rest of his family. We usually travel to Maine to see them for a few days. So it was really nice to not have to drive that extra bit also. They live next door to Kathleen and Chris now so we got to see them more also. We did some Christmas shopping and saw Santa at the mall. Jackson was very against sitting on his lap, hopefully he gets over that.

On Thanksgiving Day we moved to Uncle Danny, Auntie Ali, and Tanner's house to spend the rest of our time there. We knew that Jackson and Tanner would have a blast together and we wanted them to have lots of time together to hang out. They had so much fun playing and getting into trouble. The weather was rainy a few days, but that didn't stop them from getting outside to have some fun. It is always so great to see how much the love hanging out. And how they don't forget each other, even though they only see each other a few times a year.

We headed back home on Sunday and thankfully Joe had Monday off also. I didn't waste anytime getting all the Christmas decorations out and up. We were all beat from a long, busy week, but it felt good to be home and have all the Christmas stuff up. Now we can enjoy it for the month. This is my favorite time of year!

We have lots of fun things planned for the next few weeks....including our neighborhood Tree Lighting Ceremony, Cookies with Santa, Christmas parties, more shopping, gingerbread house making, and lots more! Stay posted for many more pics!!

Veteran's Day in the City

The weather was so beautiful on Veteran's Day that we decided to head in to the city and walk around. Our ultimate goal was a good family photo in front of the White House. The weather was gorgeous and the city wasn't too crowded. We had a good time exploring. Jackson had a blast sharing his granola bar with some local animals. First it was just a few little birdies that were enjoying the treat. Then a big fat squirrel joined us too. When the pigeons started to arrive we knew it was time to move on. It was crazy how close they all got to us!

First Dentist Appointment

Jackson took his first trip to the dentist this morning. They (whoever "they" is! Dentists I suppose...) say that a child's first visit to the dentist should be shortly after they turn one-or have most of their teeth. We were only 2 years late, but we finally got there. I was not really looking forward to it since I know Jackson is in a non- cooperative mood these days. But he totally shocked me. I thought we were in for it when he took the toothbrush the hygienist gave him and threw it down, saying "No thanks!". At least he was polite, sort of...At that point I was just hoping he would sit in the chair for a brief ~~picture~~ moment. Once we got back, he gladly hopped into the chair and let them do anything and everything to him! He was answering their questions and loving every minute of it. The hygienist polished/cleaned his teeth, flossed them, and put a vitamin sealant on them. I think Jackson enjoyed the rinsing and spitting the most. After his teeth were all nice and clean, Dr. Leaf came over to take a peak. Jackson opened wide and let him count all his teeth and show me a few spots to watch. He also did a little scraping. But overall, he said his teeth look great!! After giving everyone high fives, Jackson hopped down to get his balloon and a sticker and prize. Oh, and to take one last picture, of course. The office had a space theme, so I think that helped Jackson feel right at home. Nothing like staring at a HUGE astronaut and space shuttle while having your teeth cleaned. I am so proud of my little boy!! Now let's hope for the same experience in six months....and many years to come!

Halloween 2010!

Last week Grammy and Grampy arrived for a visit. Jackson was very excited that they would be here to celebrate Halloween with him this year. Joe was in Scotland for work (tough work, huh?!) all last week so it was really nice for me to have a few extra sets of hands to help out with the wild Indian that lives in our house these days.

Saturday afternoon Grammy and Jackson tackled carving our pumpkin. They had a good time. Poor Grammy had to do all the "yucky" scooping work because Jackson didn't even want to put his hands inside the pumpkin. Maybe next year....

On Sunday, we visited Jake and Skyler before heading out trick or treating with Luke and Anna. It was a beautiful Fall night and a very successful Halloween for Jackson. Good thing he "practiced" trick or treating earlier that day with out candy.

Rest of Holiday Weekend

The beautiful weekend weather continued on Sunday so after Church we decided to head to downtown Clifton to check out the Clifton Day Festival. We live very close to downtown Clifton and had never been there before. Another first accomplished this weekend! Downtown Clifton has a quaint little downtown area that has a few really good restaurants, ice cream shop, lots of antique stores, and a great kids playground. Lots of people have told us how cute it is but we hadn't made it there before this weekend. It is hard to believe you are in the DC area when you are driving there past rolling hills full of horses and houses with big yards. We walked around the festival and checked out the vendors and then let Jackson play on the playground a bit. I forgot my camera (Gasp!) so you will just have to come visit us if you want to tour Downtown Clifton too.

On Monday, Jackson and I decided to join my friend Tracey and her two kids, Skyler and Jake, at Burke Nursery's Pumpkin Playground. Pumpkin "patches" around here are huge! They are more like amusement parks with all the activities they have. It was another gorgeous but blazing hot day. Didn't bother the kids, they had a blast!There were tons of slides, wooden structures to play in, pumpkins to pose by, balloon animal making clowns, wagon rides, bounce houses, mazes, and more!

Playing Tourist!

Saturday was a beautiful day, so we decided to take advantage of the city and play tourist for the day. And, sadly, this was the first time we had been into the city since we moved here. We hope to start taking advantage of all that DC has to offer. This trip to the city was devoted to the Air and Space Museum. With Jackson's love of al lthings rockets and space, we thought it would be a hit. We had planned to take the metro to the Smithsonian, and then walk to the museum. But the DC area Transit Authority had other plans for our little trip. The Orange Line Metro was having some track work done all weekend long. So we had to get off a few stops early and take a shuttle bus to another stop and walk about 1/2 mile to the museum. No worries. Jackson enjoyed every bit of it. The museum was great and Jackson really enjoyed seeing all the rockets and planes. First successful trip to DC accomplished!! Where to next? Maybe now I will have the courage to venture into the city on my own with Jackson...
